Norwich Business Womens Network

Central Networking for Norwich's Business Women

Mary-Jane Kingsland, Chair of the Norwich Businesswomen's Network and the Committee warmly welcome you to the NBWN website.

Mary-Jane says, "The Norwich Businesswomen's Network was founded in 1990 by local professional women who recognised the need for a networking organisation that embraced and supported women, working in and around Norwich. Since then the network membership, now in excess of 100, has met every second Wednesday in the month over lunch; to network and build relationships with other like minded businesswomen. The Committee are dedicated to providing a forum that is both welcoming and friendly.

We take care to select venues which offer quality whilst also facilitating our monthly speaker; chosen from a variety of industries and backgrounds to talk upon a range of topics that inspire and inform our membership. We continue to support local charities and despite keeping the cost of annual membership low and the price of lunches reasonable, we are delighted to fulfill our ongoing commitment to local good causes. Each year, after a membership vote we choose three charities that serve the community. From time to time we also arrange special events to provide a boost to our charitable fund; address important topics and have some fun! At the end of each year we invite all the charity representatives to a special, members only Christmas lunch - a real calendar highlight. I am very proud to have been elected Chair of this long standing, successful network. If you want to develop mutually rewarding contacts and build friendship with other like minded businesswomen, I recommend that you get in touch and come along to the next lunch as our guest. We look forward to welcoming you ! " M-J

Please have a look at our Charities page for more information about the three charities that the network membership are supporting this year.

Our successful format enables our members and their guests to promote debate, stimulate ideas and make contacts in a relaxed and friendly environment - we look forward to meeting you!"

A VERY SPECIAL JUNE EVENT

The NBWN were delighted to host a special event on the 9th June 2010 at the Assembly House. We were joined by the Women in Research and Enterprise Forum, WREF, a network sponsored by the Norwich Business School at the University of East Anglia, ResNet and the Careers Centre. The aim of WREF is to create a sustainable network of inter-relationships between the university’s community of women staff, researchers and students, regional women; enterprise policy makers and enterprising women within the East Anglia region. Our Speaker was Deborah Cadman OBE. She became Chief Executive of EEDA in July 2008. Deborah gained her first degree in politics and started her career in the engineering department of the London Borough of Newham. Her next post required a move to Birmingham where she spent two years managing a voluntary sector project in Handsworth, developing partnerships and community strategies and gained a clear appreciation of neighbourhoods. After joining Birmingham City Council as an economic development officer, Deborah worked on some of the biggest urban regeneration projects in the country. During this period she also worked on major policy projects and public and private sector ventures while gaining a masters degree in economics. As head of corporate policy at Redcar and Cleveland Borough, Deborah was responsible for regeneration, social policy, partnerships and 'best value'. She was also a member of the National Charities Lotteries Board Advisory Committee in the North East. During this time she gained a second masters degree in management. Deborah then transferred to central government on secondment. Whilst at the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions in its modernisation team, Deborah worked with senior civil servants on local government legislation, advised ministers and provided direct support to councils in the East of England on the modernisation agenda. A move to the Audit Commission left Deborah responsible for inspections in the London region and management of corporate governance inspections in Walsall, Enfield and Hackney, working with local government to develop sustainable improvement plans. Deborah held the post of Chief Executive of St Edmundsbury Borough Council, which gained 'excellent' performing status in 2007, and was also interim Chief Executive of Waveney District Council between January and March 2008. She was awarded an OBE in 2006 for services to local government. Deborah talked to us about Leadership - with women in mind. Please find a pdf of her presentation attached
